As a cancer survivor, I take pride in sharing organizations that support people currently battling the disease. One such group is The Send It Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping young adults facing cancer heal through the restorative power of outdoor adventure.
About The Send It Foundation
Founded by outdoor enthusiast Jamie Schou, The Send It Foundation grew out of Jamie’s passion for skiing, his mountain community in Truckee, California, and his determination to live fully every day. Jamie’s guiding belief was simple: none of us know what tomorrow holds, but we all have today. That sense of urgency and joy became the foundation’s mission.
The Send It Foundation organizes outdoor adventures specifically for young adults living with cancer. Since its inception, the foundation has completed 31 programs and served around 150 participants. Life-affirming activities such as surfing, skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking give these young people a chance to step away from hospitals and treatments, rebuild confidence, and experience joy in nature.
Jamie passed away in 2014 at the age of 35, but his adventurous spirit and compassion live on through his family and the foundation he created.
Jamie’s Titan
At the heart of Jamie’s work was his 2006 Nissan Titan, a reliable vehicle that hauled gear and participants to outdoor programs across the country.
After a chance meeting with the Nissan team at a lifestyle trade show in California, the company stepped in to help with repairs and maintenance, keeping Jamie’s Titan on the road so the foundation could continue running its programs.
Today the truck is affectionately known as the “Send It TITAN” and remains a visible symbol of the foundation’s work. Nissan’s support helped ensure more young people could leave clinics and hospitals for meaningful time outdoors.
Dealing with cancer is overwhelming for patients and their families. Outdoor adventures provide a vital break from that reality—catching a wave, shredding a slope, or riding a mountain trail can restore a sense of freedom and joy that treatments and clinics often take away.
