How to Do the Double Maneuver in a Chevy Colorado

The Chevy Colorado made a major impact in the mid-size truck segment, earning Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year in 2015 and again in 2016 after Chevrolet introduced the 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel. That diesel delivers an impressive 31 mpg on the highway, a figure rare in any truck class. To showcase the Colorado’s versatility, Chevrolet organized a day of surf and snow with pro surfer Damien Hobgood and motocross gear brand Fox Head Inc., using a special Shoreline edition for the event.

Colorado Shoreline Edition

We loaded our 2016 Colorado with surfboards, skis, snowboards and gear, then headed to Huntington Beach. Conditions were messy with cross swells and a strong current, but Damien still put on a show. The 2017 Colorado Shoreline is aimed at younger buyers who favor customization—bold paint, blacked-out wheels and minimal chrome. It’s a striking look that will appeal to trend-conscious drivers, though our preference remains the extra cab Z71 4×4 with the Duramax turbo-diesel for its combination of capability and efficiency.

Chevy GearOn System

The truck we drove came equipped with Chevrolet’s GearOn system, featuring factory-installed Thule racks and accessories. That means buyers don’t have to source aftermarket solutions to transport boards, bikes or skis—order the gear from the dealer and the Colorado arrives ready for outdoor adventures.

Our 9’2″ longboard fit comfortably in the bed while snowboards were secured by a locking Thule ski rack. There was still plenty of room for gear bags and other items in the bed and cabin, demonstrating the Colorado’s practical cargo capacity for mixed surf-and-snow days.

The Drive

As someone who typically drives a full-size truck, I was skeptical about downsizing, but the Colorado challenged my assumptions. It handled freeway speeds, mountain passes and tight parking with confidence. Fuel economy was notably good—so much so that we returned without needing to refuel. While the V6 offers quicker throttle response, the Duramax turbo-diesel provided ample torque for towing and mountain driving. Features like the exhaust brake are especially valuable when descending steep grades or towing heavy loads.

Technology in the Colorado is strong as well. In-car navigation proved accurate, OnStar remained available, and the truck’s WiFi hotspot kept us connected in areas where cell service was spotty, allowing us to check email and log in on mobile devices while in the mountains.

We appreciate Chevrolet, Fox Head Inc., and Damien Hobgood for putting together a day that showcased the Colorado’s active lifestyle credentials. Chevrolet is clearly investing in the mid-size truck market—challenging long-standing competitors by building a vehicle that suits outdoor enthusiasts and Southern California’s active community alike.
