Last week we returned to New York for an exclusive preview of Lowe’s Designer Challenge. After last year’s popular event with Nate Berkus, expectations were high—and Lowe’s delivered once again.
We arrived at the Chelsea Arts Tower on Manhattan’s West Side and rode the elevator to the 21st floor, where Lowe’s representatives welcomed guests with warm smiles.
For this challenge, Lowe’s asked three designers to each create an 11’ x 11’ outdoor space using pieces from Lowe’s 2012 spring outdoor collection as well as any other products available in Lowe’s stores. The participating designers—Marcela Valladolid, Elaine Griffin, and Danny Seo—brought very different perspectives and styles to their designs.

Beyond the creative displays, the setting offered a stunning backdrop: a beautiful sunset and sweeping views of the Hudson River and downtown Manhattan added to the experience.
Designer highlights included:

Marcela embraced a true outdoor aesthetic, layering succulents and greenery and featuring a stylish pergola that served as a focal point of her space.

Elaine’s design felt inviting and vibrant, combining warm textures, colorful accents, and elegant lattice work enhanced by atmospheric lighting.

Danny created an outdoor-themed movie lounge, complete with comfortable seating and snack-friendly details, perfect for relaxed evenings outdoors.
Voting remained open through June 7 on Lowe’s Facebook page, where the public could select their favorite design. The winning designer’s chosen charity receives $50,000, so the competition supports important causes. Marcela designated Olivewood Gardens, Elaine supported the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, and Danny’s chosen charity was the Yum-O! Foundation.
