Stay Cool Without Air Conditioning: Practical Tips for Hot Days

After enduring five sweltering, air-conditioning-free days earlier this month, I gained a new appreciation for people who choose to spend the summer without A/C. It’s definitely possible to stay comfortable, especially with a few well-placed fans, sturdy window coverings, and some practical strategies.

I first found inspiration in a piece from Natural Home magazine, a useful resource for green and eco-friendly living. The web editor Susan Melgren put together a helpful list of ways to live without air conditioning, and I was surprised by how many of her suggestions my husband and I had already adopted while our A/C was out.

1. Use Fans Strategically

Fans are essential. Placing them in key locations throughout your home improves air circulation and makes indoor temperatures feel much cooler. Mix fan types for best results: box fans for windows, oscillating stand fans for shared spaces, and small clip-on fans for work areas or vanities. A personal tip: I clip a small fan to the side of our bathroom vanity when getting ready in the morning. It helps a lot—and gives that breezy, put-together feeling when my hair catches the air.

2. Keep Your Home Dark During the Day

Close curtains and blinds to block direct sunlight. It may feel dim inside, but reducing solar gain is one of the most effective ways to keep temperatures down. For extreme heat, consider a dual-layer approach: place boards over windows and lower blinds or curtains on top to create an insulated barrier against the sun.

3. Use Landscaping to Shade Your Home

Smart landscaping creates a natural protective layer that lowers indoor temperatures. Plant deciduous trees and shrubs on the east and west sides of your house to block the low-angle morning and evening sun. Leafy groundcovers help cool the surrounding soil, and climbing vines can shade exterior walls and reduce heat transfer into the house.

Practical Comfort Tips

Alongside fans, window coverings, and landscaping, a few everyday habits make hot days more bearable: stay well hydrated, wear light and loose-fitting clothing indoors, and keep cold treats like popsicles in the freezer. These small measures help regulate body temperature and make life without A/C much more comfortable.

Do you make it through summer without air conditioning, or do you rely on A/C to stay comfortable?
