Greenworks Electric Lawn Mower: Tames Thick Grass and Weeds

Our lawn isn’t the picture of perfection. It’s a rough patchwork of grass, weeds, and bare spots that gets a lot of use but doesn’t look great. That mix can make mowing difficult, yet the Greenworks 60V self-propelled electric lawn mower handled it without complaint. This cordless brushless mower delivered consistent performance across uneven terrain and heavy growth, and here’s a close look at why it stood out for us.

Electric Power, Fewer Headaches

After years of wrestling with gas mowers, switching to electric has been a revelation. Gas machines can be loud, smelly, and temperamental—leftover fuel, stale oil, and finicky starts are inconvenient. By contrast, the Greenworks 60V cordless brushless mower eliminates fumes, cuts noise dramatically, and simplifies ownership.

battery power

The 60V system delivers more than enough power for most residential yards. The mower ships with a 5Ah battery rated for up to 60 minutes of runtime under moderate conditions. On our yard—half weeds and extra-thick growth—the mower worked harder than usual and still finished the job in about 35 minutes with roughly half the battery remaining. The brushless motor increases efficiency and reduces wear, helping the mower last longer. Greenworks backs the unit with a 4-year mower warranty and a 2-year battery warranty, which adds confidence to the purchase.

Self-Propelled for Easier Mowing

Even though our yard is modest in size, the self-propelled drive makes the chore much easier. Speed is adjustable, so you can slow it down for tight areas or speed up for open stretches. The feature is especially useful on slopes—pushing uphill is far less effort when the wheels do the work.

We worried the self-propelled drive would drain the battery faster, but Greenworks includes a 5Ah battery with the self-propelled model (versus 4Ah on some non-driven models), so runtime remains comparable. The drive system also makes mowing more enjoyable—our son now volunteers to mow simply because it’s easier and more fun.

For safety, the handle has two levers: one to start the mower and a second one that must be engaged for the self-propelled function. The dual-lever setup gives you straightforward control and reduces accidental movement.

Vertical Storage Saves Space

Storage space is limited in our shed, and our old gas mower consumed a lot of floor area even with the handle folded. Gas machines also can’t be stored vertically without risking fuel leaks. The Greenworks electric mower is designed for vertical storage, freeing up valuable floor space and making it easier to stow in a small closet or tight shed.

To store it vertically, fold the handle down using the tool-less knobs and tip the mower forward. The compact footprint when stored makes it practical for small outdoor storage areas.

Quick, Precise Height Adjustment

height

The mower features a single-lever, seven-position height adjustment that’s easy to operate and gives fine control over cut height. You can change the deck height almost on the fly to match grass type, season, or desired appearance. As a general best practice, follow the one-third rule—never remove more than one-third of the grass blade height at once—to reduce stress on the lawn and help prevent browning.

3-in-1 Discharge Options

bagging

The Greenworks 60V provides three discharge choices: mulching, bagging, and side discharge. On our initial mowing we used the rear bag to collect clippings and weeds, leaving the yard clean and the bag full. The catcher held more than enough for our property and the mower maintained speed and power even as the bag filled.

60V Battery Ecosystem

The 60V battery platform is a major benefit. Once you invest in a 60V battery, it can power a wide range of Greenworks tools—string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, pole saws, blowers, and even snow throwers—so you can build a cordless system without buying a separate battery for each tool. If you already own 60V batteries, you can often buy tool-only models to save money.

The 60V platform strikes a good balance of power and runtime for most homeowners who need more durability and battery life than entry-level tools provide.

At the time of our review, this mower was priced competitively given its features and warranty coverage. We recommend it for homeowners seeking a reliable, low-maintenance mower with cordless convenience and the flexibility of a shared battery platform.
