Airstream Interstate 24X: Luxury Adventure Van Guide

Airstream has embraced the van-life trend with the introduction of the Interstate 24X, a purpose-built Class B adventure van designed to take explorers beyond paved roads.

While the Airstream Atlas and the Interstate 24GL and 24GT focus on luxury touring—optimized for highways and long-distance comfort—many van-life enthusiasts want the ability to head down dirt tracks and explore off the beaten path. Until now, Airstream’s touring coaches weren’t configured for that kind of off-road use.

The Interstate 24X changes that. Built on the same Mercedes-Benz chassis as the 24GL and 24GT, Airstream has modified the platform for serious off-road adventure while retaining the craftsmanship and refinement the brand is known for.

For those who prefer not to tow a trailer, a Class B like the Interstate 24X delivers a self-contained option that blends livability with rugged capability.

4-Wheel Drive

Airstream outfitted the 24X to handle varied terrain: it rides on six all-terrain tires, features a 4×4 drivetrain, and includes electronically controlled air-ride suspension. These upgrades significantly improve the van’s off-pavement performance and stability when conditions get rough.

Together, these systems make the 24X far more capable than previous Interstate models when you leave the highway behind.

Rugged Lower-Body Coating

Off-road driving means more exposure to rocks, brush, and road debris. To protect the coach, Airstream applies a durable lower-body coating that covers the front and rear bumpers, extends down each side, and protects the wheel areas. Similar to spray-on bed liner used on trucks, this finish resists scratches and dents and stands up to heavy use.

No Cassette Tank

Unlike some compact camper setups that use removable cassette-style toilets, the Interstate 24X includes a dedicated black-water tank with a pump that lets you connect directly to campground sewer hookups—no manual cassette emptying required.

Tank capacities are sized for real-world use: 23 gallons fresh, 24 gallons gray, and 11 gallons black.

Advanced Power System

The 24X is designed to conserve energy and support extended off-grid stays. Rather than focusing on large power-hungry entertainment systems, the van emphasizes efficient onboard power and solar capability.

Its electrical package includes 100 Ah LiFePO4 deep-cycle lithium batteries by Battle Born, a 30-amp energy management system, a 2,000-watt inverter, and 300 watts of custom, flexible, military-grade solar panels dedicated to the house batteries. An additional 100-watt panel charges the chassis battery, and a solar controller manages charging. Portable solar inputs on both curb and street sides let you add extra panels and maximize energy harvest when parked in the sun.

Modular Table System

Flexibility is a priority inside the 24X. A modular table system features four mounting points throughout the floorplan, allowing multiple configurations for dining, working, or food prep.

You can spin the captain’s chairs to create a mobile desk, place the table in one of two rear mounts, or install it outside the entry door to use as a prep station or standing workstation—making the interior adaptable to many uses.

Full Kitchen

The Interstate 24X includes a full galley suitable for everyday cooking: a solid-surface countertop with a deep sink and cover, a two-burner cooktop, a 0.7 cu. ft. microwave, and an electric refrigerator/freezer. The kitchen balances compact design with practical amenities for comfortable meals on the road.

Airstream Interstate 24X Class B Adventure Van

All of these features come at a premium, but building an equivalent expedition-ready Class B on your own would be costly and time-consuming—and you wouldn’t benefit from Airstream’s factory fit, finish, quality control, and warranty. The Interstate 24X is one of the few turnkey, factory-built expedition Class B touring coaches available, ready for buyers who want capable off-road performance combined with the comforts of a well-crafted coach.

For prospective buyers, ordering early is wise—demand and waitlists for factory-built, off-road-capable Class B rigs can grow quickly. The 24X represents a new direction for Airstream, bringing off-grid capability to a brand long associated with refined touring coaches.
