In April, I had the privilege of attending the VIP Press Tour at Coverings, an international trade show dedicated to every facet of the tile and stone industry, held in Orlando, Florida. Over three days I was fully immersed in the world of tile, and I’m sharing a carefully curated glimpse of the show with you.
The volume and variety of exceptional tile made it difficult to capture everything, but four clear design directions stood out across many national exhibitors. Rather than fleeting trends, these were recurring themes that signaled where tile design and manufacturing are heading.
1) Graphic Tile

Graphic tile made a bold statement throughout the show. From pixelated mosaic surfaces to oversized 9″ by 14″ plank tiles printed to resemble distressed vintage billboards complete with graffiti, designers are embracing high-impact visuals. Some tiles were printed to mimic wallpaper, while others featured embossed city skylines or strong linear motifs. The industry is experimenting with imagery, scale, and surface finishes to create dramatic, conversation-starting installations—so much so that even QR codes and wayfinding elements appeared in tile form at the event.
2) Intricate Mosaics

Intricately laid mosaics were another standout. At booths such as Tile of Spain, I saw mosaics with highly detailed patterns and refined color transitions. Advances in stone cutting and digital manufacturing have simplified installation and expanded colorways, allowing smaller, more complex pieces to be united into large-scale artworks. Today’s mosaics combine craftsmanship and modern tech to deliver installations that are both sophisticated and highly customizable.
3) Gemstone Tile
I was particularly taken with tile made from cross-section cuts of geodes and semi-precious stones—the kind of installation that reads like a wall-sized natural gem. These pieces, aligned in tight patterns, create luminous, jewel-like surfaces that become focal points in any space. For those with tighter budgets, manufacturers are offering photo-realistic ceramic and porcelain tiles that faithfully reproduce the look of onyx, agate, and other stones. These printed alternatives deliver comparable visual impact while being more accessible and easier to maintain.
4) 3D Tile

Three-dimensional tile is emerging as a favored choice for accent walls and installations that require tactile interest. Some 3D tiles are designed to coordinate with floor products, producing a seamless flow that emphasizes depth and movement. Others highlight texture—ranging from fabric-like surfaces to crisp geometric reliefs—creating surfaces that change appearance with light and perspective. These tiles invite touch and add a sculptural element to interior design.
Overall, the message at Coverings felt clear: go big or go home. Manufacturers and designers are pushing the boundaries of scale, surface, and fabrication to create striking, immersive environments. Between graphic prints, detailed mosaics, gemstone-like slabs, and dimensional surfaces, the tile and stone industry is demonstrating impressive innovation—both in aesthetics and in manufacturing techniques.
Many thanks to Coverings for the opportunity to attend the VIP Press Tour and to experience these remarkable products up close. The show underlined how tile can transform a space, elevate design, and make a powerful visual statement.
