Thompson’s Tinted WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain — Color Guide & Uses

Last year we added a redwood fence extension atop our brick wall and upgraded the backyard gate. The fence provides excellent privacy and proved to be a smarter, more attractive solution than continuing to build up the brick wall.

The original redwood tone has faded somewhat, however, so the fence is due for a fresh coat of sealant to restore its color and maintain its protection.

Thompson’s recently expanded their exterior wood waterproofing line with a new tinted WaterSeal waterproofing stain available in cedar, desert brown, and nutmeg. We selected the cedar tint for our fence because it closely matches the faded redwood and offers a warm, natural appearance we prefer.

Below are recommended usage guidelines to get the best results when applying the tinted WaterSeal waterproofing stain:

  • For exterior use only.
  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or on very hot days to ensure proper penetration. Ideal surface and air temperatures are above 50°F and below 95°F.
  • Prepare surfaces thoroughly. Remove all mildew stains, dust, dirt, oil, soot, grease, and other contaminants before application.
  • Clean the wood using a deck cleaner formulated for the purpose—follow the cleaner manufacturer’s label directions and safety precautions.
  • Strip away any loose, flaking, or peeling stain. Applying over failing finish will cause continued peeling.
  • If the surface is damp from cleaning or weather, allow it to dry completely—at least 48 hours—before applying the stain to ensure optimal penetration and adhesion.
  • This tinted product is being carried exclusively at Walmart.

With proper surface preparation and application conditions, the tinted WaterSeal waterproofing stain can refresh the fence’s appearance while restoring weather protection. Choosing a subtle cedar tint helped us maintain a natural look that complements the yard and extends the life of the wood.
