2012 Flooring Trends Preview: What’s Coming in Floors

2011 is winding down, and with the new year approaching, 2012 flooring trends are beginning to emerge. If you’re planning a flooring purchase in the coming months, here’s an early look at what to expect, based on Shelley Pond’s report for the official SURFACES/StonExpo blog. A comprehensive view of 2012 trends will be available at the SURFACES Trends Hub, a concept that debuted at the 2011 show.

Color takes a bold step forward next season. Designers are drawing inspiration from three distinctive palettes:

  • Eco Carnival: Rhythmic patterning, bright botanicals and tribal geometrics bring lively, organic energy to floors.
  • Colour Capital: Angular shapes, sharp color contrasts and clashing patterns create dynamic, contemporary surfaces.
  • The Abyss: Effects inspired by illumination and shadow, wave-like patterns and textures that recall sea life offer depth and subtle drama.

If you prefer a restrained, refined look, Majestic Minimalism blends historical richness with modern restraint. Drawing on Baroque and Rococo influences, this trend uses muted base hues—think plaster-of-Paris neutrals—accented by regal tones such as royal red, princess blue and tuxedo black for an elegant, understated statement.

For those who enjoy mixing heritage and innovation, the Old To New trend combines simplicity and self-sufficiency with modern technology. Influenced by the rise of urban homesteading and plugged-in lifestyles, it fuses rustic, authentic materials with contemporary finishes and tech-friendly design elements to create versatile, future-ready floors.

We’ll continue to track how these trends translate into new products and installations. The 2011 SURFACES Expo revealed many exciting directions in flooring design, and expectations are high for the next show to introduce even more fresh ideas and solutions.

Are you considering new flooring? Whether you favor vivid color palettes, refined minimalism, or a hybrid of old and new, there are strong trends shaping product choices for 2012. Which style appeals to you most?
