The 2020 Corvette Stingray C8 marks a major milestone for General Motors, combining advanced engineering, high performance and impressive affordability. Unveiled recently, the new Corvette delivers blistering acceleration, with 0–60 mph times under three seconds in equipped forms and up to 495 horsepower—yet it starts at around $60,000. With that combination of performance and price, the C8 is being called an everyday supercar.
Traditionally, mid-engine sports cars have been dominated by European marques. While Ford’s GT exists in the segment, its six-figure price places it far above the Corvette’s accessible offering. The C8 changes that dynamic by delivering mid-engine performance without the typical supercar price tag.
Mid-Engine Performance

At the center of the 2020 Stingray is Chevrolet’s next-generation 6.2L Small Block V-8 LT2 engine—the only naturally aspirated V-8 in its immediate segment. With the available performance exhaust, the LT2 produces 495 horsepower (369 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque, the highest output for an entry-level Corvette to date.
“Though now placed behind the driver, the LT2 gives the same visceral experience we all expect from Corvette,” said Jordan Lee, GM’s global chief engineer of Small Block engines. “The LT2 has been designed to deliver excellent low-end torque and high-end power to give thrilling pedal response at any RPM.”
Relocating the engine from the front to a mid-ship position brings several tangible benefits for road and track performance:
- Improved weight distribution with a rearward bias that enhances traction and stability in straight-line acceleration and on circuits.
- Enhanced responsiveness and driver control because the seating position is moved closer to the front axle, giving a more immediate feel for the front-end dynamics.
- Class-leading acceleration for an entry Corvette, capable of sub-three-second 0–60 mph times with the Z51 Performance Package.
- A more racecar-like forward view, thanks to a lower hood, instrument panel and steering wheel; both driver and passenger enjoy excellent sightlines.
- Maintained practicality with dual cargo areas providing a combined 12.6 cubic feet of usable luggage space—large enough for travel bags or two sets of golf clubs.
All-New Design Details

The C8 introduces many design elements new to Corvette and to GM, blending aerodynamic efficiency with a modern, driver-focused cabin.
- Low-profile headlamps built around all-new projector units for a distinctive front-end appearance.
- Hidden releases for doors, hood and hatch that preserve the clean sculpted surfaces.
- Large side air intakes to feed and cool the mid-mounted engine while improving aerodynamic balance.
- A-pillar geometry optimized for both visual cues of speed and improved outward visibility.
- A prominent rear hatch that showcases the engine bay and incorporates seven ventilation outlets.
- Quad exhaust tips placed at the extreme outboard ends of the rear fascia for a wide, purposeful stance.
- Dual-element LED taillamps with animated turn signals for modern styling and visibility.
- Premium interior materials including hand-wrapped leather with thick press stitching and extensive use of real metal.
- Stainless-steel speaker grilles paired with a Bose Performance Series audio system.
- Available carbon-fiber trim on GT2 and Competition Sport seats, with the option of real aluminum or carbon-fiber trim plates for console and doors.

Purpose-Driven Seats

Recognizing that Corvette buyers will use the car in different ways, Chevrolet provides three seat types tailored to distinct priorities: comfort, a balance of comfort and performance, and track-focused support.
- GT1: A sporty, comfort-oriented seat that offers supportive bolstering for spirited driving. It features Mulan leather trim, optional two-way lumbar support and adjustable wings.
- GT2: New to Corvette, GT2 seats blend racing-inspired looks with comfort for longer drives. They include dual-density foam, carbon-fiber trim, Napa leather inserts, Mulan leather bolsters, a jet-black painted seat back, two-way lumbar support, adjustable wings and heating/ventilation.
- Competition Sport: Built for track enthusiasts, these seats provide aggressive bolstering, full Napa seating surfaces, carbon-fiber headrest trim, heating and ventilation, and a durable performance textile inspired by Kevlar.
Production of the new Corvette C8 is scheduled at Chevrolet’s Bowling Green plant later this year, with base pricing targeted around $60,000. The convertible option is also available—the roof comes off to open the driving experience further.

With its combination of mid-engine dynamics, powerful naturally aspirated V-8, modern design and multiple personalization choices, the 2020 Corvette Stingray is positioned to be a strong seller and a high-profile return to form for the American sports car on a broader stage.
