5.11 Tactical earned its reputation by designing purpose-built tactical gear and apparel for a wide range of uses. We tested several items from their latest collection during a weekend trip to Bridgeport, CA, where we hiked, explored, and trained. Below are the standouts we relied on during that trip.

Our outing combined trail time and practical field use: navigation, vehicle checks, and range drills. The gear needed to be comfortable for movement, durable against abrasion, and capable of carrying daily essentials. 5.11’s pieces delivered across those priorities.
5.11 Tactical Defender Flex Range Tactical Pant
The Defender Flex Range Pant stands out for its balance of mobility and toughness. Built in a slim five-pocket silhouette, these pants are ideal for range work, urban wear, and outdoor activity. The fabric stretches and recovers well, making kneeling and dynamic movement comfortable, while reinforced belt loops and pocket construction handle everyday carry without sagging or wear.

In hard-use scenarios—scrapes against rocks or brushing through brush—the Defender Flex showed good abrasion resistance and maintained its fit. If you need a pant that works as well at the shooting range as it does around camp, this is a strong choice.

5.11 Tactical Recon Charge Short-Sleeve Shirt
The Recon Charge short-sleeve blends cotton and performance materials to stay comfortable and functional. Its body is 60% cotton and 40% polyester for a natural feel with some durability, while the backside and sleeves use a 92% polyester / 8% elastane mesh for breathability and moisture-wicking. The mesh also helps control odors during extended wear.

This shirt performed well across active and casual scenarios—training, trekking, or downtime—and stayed comfortable during high-effort sections of the hike thanks to its ventilated panels.
5.11 Tactical Cable Hiker Tactical Boot

The Cable Hiker is a refined hiking boot designed with practical tech: 5.11’s SlipStream™ Agion® low-friction antimicrobial lining reduces odor-causing bacteria, and the OrthoLite® X-40 high-rebound footbed aids quick recovery from repeated impact. A reinforced rubber toe adds protection against rocks and scrapes. These features combine to make a boot that’s comfortable on long approaches and durable on rough terrain.

5.11 Tactical TacTec Plate Carrier

The TacTec plate carrier is equally useful for training and protection. It fits securely and allows adjustable loading with weight plates for conditioning work, making it a practical tool for strength and endurance sessions. Additionally, it accepts ballistic plates if you need to use it for torso protection in high-risk environments.

Its modular design and secure fit make it a versatile piece for both training progression and operational use.
5.11 Tactical Response XR1 Flashlight

The Response XR1 is compact enough for everyday carry while offering robust performance. Rated IP68, it’s dustproof and waterproof to two meters, which proved useful when we worked on trail repairs and inspected our vehicle’s suspension. Its size and waterproofing make it a dependable tool for both camp tasks and roadside troubleshooting.
