I recently completed a backyard privacy fence as a Father’s Day DIY gift to myself. The new fence gives us a private space for weekend barbecues and lets us enjoy gatherings without worrying about disturbing the neighbors.
Throughout the project I wore a pair of DuluthFlex Ultimate Fire Hose Cargo Pants, and they’ve quickly become my preferred work pants. I’ve used the standard Fire Hose Cargo Pants before, but for hot summer work I wanted something lighter. The DuluthFlex Ultimate pants are noticeably lighter while maintaining the durability I expect.
These pants stood up well to the typical hazards of fence installation — scraping against steel panels, brushing past trees and shrubs, and kneeling on rough surfaces — without tearing. They also offer ample pocket storage for drill bits, concrete screws, and other small tools so everything stayed within easy reach.

The DuluthFlex model is roughly a third lighter than the classic Fire Hose canvas pants, yet remains highly durable and adds significantly more stretch for comfort and mobility.
Key features:
- DuluthFlex™ Fire Hose cotton canvas with 3% spandex for stretch—kneeling, crouching, and stretching feel natural, not restrictive
- FendOff™ finish to repel rain and resist stains
- Eleven larger, reinforced pockets, including 4-in-1 cargo pockets with tuckable, quick-access flaps
- Jeans-style back pockets that lie flat and reduce bulk when sitting
- Double-chap knee pouches that accept removable kneepads (sold separately)
- Waistband tool loops to secure a tool accessory system (sold separately)
- Hidden Crouch Gusset™ for extra room when crouching or climbing
- 4″ back belt loop designed not to gap when you bend
If you want a lightweight, strong, and flexible work pant with practical storage and thoughtful construction, the DuluthFlex Ultimate Fire Hose Cargo Pants are an excellent choice.
