Change Your Clocks for Daylight Saving and Test Smoke Alarm Batteries

This weekend we turn our clocks back an hour for the end of daylight saving time (unless you live in Arizona). Along with resetting your clocks, take a moment to check the batteries in your smoke detectors — it’s a simple safety step that can make a big difference.

Every smoke detector includes a test button. Press and hold that button until you hear the alarm sound; a clear, loud beep confirms the unit is functioning and the battery has adequate charge. Many models will also emit intermittent chirps when the battery is low to prompt replacement. If you hear those warning chirps, don’t ignore them — replace the battery promptly to ensure continued protection.

For best results, replace batteries at least once a year, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions. When you change batteries, use fresh, high-quality batteries and verify the detector’s position and mounting are secure. It’s also a good idea to vacuum around the unit occasionally to remove dust that can interfere with sensing elements.

In addition to battery checks, test each detector monthly. If a detector is more than 10 years old, consider replacing the entire unit, since sensors and electronics degrade over time. For homes with multiple floors, place detectors in hallways outside sleeping areas and on each level. If you have a carbon monoxide alarm, test and maintain it on the same schedule.

Taking a few minutes during the clock change to test and, if necessary, replace smoke detector batteries is an easy habit that enhances your household’s safety. Have a safe and pleasant weekend.
