Since its debut in 1998, the Lexus RX has set the benchmark for luxury crossover SUVs. Over four generations it has become a favorite among families and luxury buyers for its comfort, reliability and refined driving experience.

The redesigned 2023 Lexus RX marks the arrival of the fifth generation, keeping the RX’s core strengths while introducing bold styling updates and revised drivetrains to modernize the model. Lexus aims to preserve what owners value—comfort, quality and refinement—while offering sharper looks and new powertrain choices.
For 2023 the RX lineup includes a turbocharged gas engine in the RX 350, the RX 350h hybrid, and a performance-oriented RX 500h hybrid. Lexus has also confirmed a plug-in hybrid RX 450h model is coming soon, expanding options for those who want greater electric driving range.

I spent a day driving each of the RX variants in the rolling hills around Los Olivos, California. The RX 500h in the new Copper Crest finish immediately caught my eye—its bold paint and athletic stance emphasize the sharper design direction Lexus has taken with this generation.
As a parent, I value a vehicle that can handle everyday tasks—carrying gear, family drives and errands—while still offering an engaging and attractive driving experience. The RX 500h delivers on those expectations: it’s enjoyable to drive, well-finished and stylish. Lexus has removed the optional third-row seating for this generation, prioritizing better cargo geometry and rear passenger comfort over squeezing in a seventh seat. If you regularly need seating for more than five people, other models may better suit that need, but for most buyers the revised layout improves usability and storage space.
On the road the new RX stands out thanks to a more aggressive exterior and a thoroughly updated interior. Lexus has focused on higher-quality materials, refined ergonomics and modern technology, making the cabin feel more premium than before. The driving experience is confident and composed, and I left wishing I had more time behind the wheel.

The fifth-generation RX reinforces Lexus’s commitment to blending luxury, practicality and modern performance. With multiple hybrid choices and a sharper design, the 2023 RX aims to satisfy buyers seeking a premium crossover that feels contemporary without losing the comfort and refinement that made the RX nameplate successful. After driving the lineup in varied conditions, I came away impressed by the RX 500h’s combination of style, capability and everyday usability.
