Have you ever wished for a single book that showcases the finest remodeled homes featured on This Old House? Your wish has been granted. Kevin O’Connor, host of This Old House, guides readers through his personal selections in the new book, The Best Homes from This Old House, offering room-by-room tours and insights into each project.

The book highlights a diverse range of properties, including a New England farmhouse in Carlisle, MA; a Texas bungalow in Austin, TX; a Brooklyn brownstone in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn; and an elegant Spanish Revival home in Los Angeles, CA. Each profile explores the distinctive character and craftsmanship that make these houses stand out.
We’ve been fortunate to visit several of the homes featured in the book. Most recently, we met Kevin at the Los Angeles house project where he walked us through the renovations while he and photographer Michael Casey finished capturing final images. That visit offered a firsthand look at the thoughtful design and construction choices that transformed the property.
Beyond renovation details, Kevin explains the design elements that elevate each home—how layout adjustments, material selection, lighting, and architectural details combine to create comfort, beauty, and lasting value. His commentary helps readers understand why these projects were selected for This Old House and what makes them successful examples of thoughtful renovation.
The book also includes engaging profiles of the show’s team, from the on-screen cast to the production crew. Readers will enjoy learning more about the people behind This Old House, including creator Russ Morash and longtime cameraman Stephen “Dino” D’Onofrio, whose contributions have been essential to the series’ storytelling.
In total, the book presents ten homes that span multiple architectural styles and regional traditions. Together they demonstrate a broad spectrum of design approaches and renovation solutions, offering inspiration for homeowners, designers, and anyone who appreciates well-executed restoration and remodeling.
The Best Homes from This Old House was released September 1, 2011, and is available through bookstores and online retailers. For those who follow Kevin’s work on This Old House and Ask This Old House, the book provides an intimate, informative collection of standout projects and thoughtful commentary from a trusted voice in home renovation.
