When renovating, one constant challenge is storage—specifically, creating more of it. Whether your home is two centuries old or just a couple of decades, additional storage is almost always on the list.
But what if you don’t have the square footage for a generous walk-in closet or the exact dimensions for off-the-shelf wardrobe units?
The solution is simple: put on your thinking cap, grab a tape measure and a level, and build a custom solution yourself.
In our project we started with a roughly 13′ x 10′ room that had been used as an office. It had two entryways and required passing through a half-bath to reach it, so our goal was to transform that footprint into a compact but refined master suite. A critical challenge was creating sufficient closet space within those tight dimensions.
We considered prefabricated built-in wardrobes but the measurements didn’t line up with our walls and ceiling height. Instead, we decided to construct closets ourselves, extending all the way up to the 9-foot ceilings. By sacrificing only a bit of floor area and reclaiming wall space vertically, we gained far more usable storage than a standard freestanding unit would allow. Building to the exact space meant every inch could be used, even if the highest shelves required a step stool to reach.
Custom building also let us tailor every detail to our needs. We set the height of double-hang bars to suit specific clothing types, added shelving where we needed it, and optimized the interior layout so nothing felt wasted. The result: two narrow, tall closets that frame each side of the bed and provide surprisingly generous storage without dominating the room.
If you’re dealing with limited square footage, think vertically and design around the space you have. Custom built-ins allow you to maximize storage, control finishes, and adapt dimensions to fit unique layouts—advantages that often outweigh the convenience of off-the-shelf furniture.
