Marvin Windows and Doors has introduced a factory-installed Window Opening Control Device (WOCD) for its popular Ultimate Casement series of crank-out windows to comply with the ASTM F2090-10 safety standard.
ASTM F2090-10 was created in response to growing concern about child safety and fall prevention, and to address increasing attention from media and lawmakers. Minnesota led the way with “Laela’s Law,” which prompted wider awareness of the need for window opening restrictions for occupant safety. Since then, similar rules and requirements tied to ASTM F2090-10 have been adopted or considered in other jurisdictions.
The new factory-installed WOCD limits the sash opening to four inches unless a two-step manual override is used. Once the window is closed, the limiter automatically resets, restoring the opening restriction. Marvin previously offered a field-applied version of this device for its double-hung windows; the company is now extending the option to its casement lineup with the component installed directly at the factory.
“We expect this intuitive device to be well received as a solution, whether legislation requires it or not,” said Christine Marvin, director of marketing for Marvin Windows and Doors. “Builders, homeowners and design professionals across the housing spectrum will value a high-quality, factory-installed opening control for casement windows that enhances safety without sacrificing functionality.”
By providing the WOCD as a factory-installed option, Marvin simplifies the specification and installation process. Factory installation ensures consistent performance, correct fit and finish, and reliable operation from the first use. For contractors and builders, it reduces field labor and the risk of improper aftermarket installation. For homeowners, it adds a passive safety feature that helps prevent accidental falls while preserving the ventilating benefits of casement windows.
The WOCD’s automatic reset feature means the restriction is active every time the window is closed, reducing the chance that safety controls are left disengaged. The two-step override is designed to be deliberate and intuitive: it allows adults to fully open the window when needed while maintaining a default restricted position suitable for everyday occupancy and child safety.
Marvin’s decision to offer the device factory-installed on casements aligns with broader market and regulatory trends emphasizing product-integrated safety solutions. Manufacturers increasingly respond to safety standards by integrating compliance features during production, which helps architects, builders and landlords meet code requirements and provide safer living environments.
In summary, the factory-installed Window Opening Control Device on Marvin’s Ultimate Casement windows provides an added layer of safety by limiting openings to four inches by default, resetting automatically with each closure, and allowing a purposeful two-step override for full opening. This option expands Marvin’s existing safety product lineup and delivers a convenient, consistent solution for those specifying or purchasing casement windows.
