As smartphones and tablets become ever more integral to daily life, new apps keep appearing to simplify and inspire our routines. One recent standout is the GE Mood Lighting Cam app from the well-known lighting company, designed to help homeowners envision and create different lighting atmospheres.

Open the app, snap a photo of any room, or upload an existing image. A simple sliding scale lets you shift the lighting mood from “cozy” to “intimate” to “dramatic,” with multiple gradations in between. When you land on a look you like, tap “Create This Mood,” choose which fixtures apply to your space, and the app presents GE product recommendations that can reproduce the chosen effect in your home.

If you prefer inspiration over inventing your own scene, the app includes a library of curated room photos—bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms and more—showcasing a variety of lighting schemes. Like with your own photos, you can select any preset image and press “Create The Mood” to receive a tailored list of products that will help you achieve the same lighting ambiance.

I tried the app in my loft last night. Although I already consider my lighting “cozy” and sometimes “intimate,” I experimented with the Mood Lighting Cam’s suggestions. The app steered me toward a “Creative” setting, which felt fitting for my open, loft-style space. To fully realize that look I’d need to add a few fixtures, but the app did a great job of giving me a clear starting point and a practical shopping list.

The app also includes a bulb finder organized by mood, making it easy to match the right bulb type to the atmosphere you want. Each lighting mood comes with design tips as well—suggestions for color palettes, furnishings, and placement ideas that complement the selected lighting scheme.
