Black Kitchen Design: More Gotham Than Goth

White has long been the default choice for contemporary kitchens, but darker palettes are gaining ground. Rotpunkt, the award-winning German designer and manufacturer of high-quality kitchen furniture, offers a striking alternative with its Raw 19 Kitchen. Rather than the high-gloss black finishes often seen, this design uses a 3mm sandblasted wood-effect veneer in a painted black finish to create a warm, tactile aesthetic.

The Raw Kitchen captures several of the key kitchen trends for recent years: textured materials, a darker color palette and an industrial edge. The sandblasted wood finish produces a coarse surface that mimics living wood grain, and the black paint emphasizes the rustic, dimensional character of the material. The result is a kitchen that feels both contemporary and well-worn—durable and practical for daily use while retaining a strong visual presence.

Functionality is built in alongside style. The kitchen includes a new round knurled handle finished in black, paired with Rotpunkt’s PushSoft mechanism for smooth, soft-closing operation. PushSoft can be mounted inside the carcass on either the hinge or handle side, delivering a clean look and effortless access.

Rotpunkt has also focused on the small details—what many designers call the “jewellery” of the kitchen. For 2019 models, hinges are supplied in Zircon SX105 Anthracite with Blum technology to ensure consistent performance with the brand’s drawers, baskets and shelving. Anthracite is also used to match back panels, traverses of each base unit and the inside fillers of sink units, creating a cohesive interior palette.

The kitchen’s surfaces continue the theme of durable, design-led materials. A Sima Core worktop in Statuario Matt marble effect spans the central island and the sink run. Constructed from multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin and compressed under high pressure and temperature, Sima Core delivers durability and design flexibility while maintaining a refined matt stone appearance.

Modern kitchens require furniture that works hard. Multipurpose workstations with varied sightlines and visual weights help to maximize storage without sacrificing style. Concealed cabinets provide ample, discreet storage for appliances and cookware, while carefully chosen display elements break up the visual weight and add personality.

To balance hidden storage, Rotpunkt offers display options such as its new Frame system, shown here as an open-shelved sideboard. The industrially styled Frame can be wall- or floor-mounted, freestanding or integrated, enabling flexible arrangements and visual contrast. This modular approach allows homeowners and designers to compose unique configurations that suit both practical needs and aesthetic preferences.

The Raw Kitchen’s blend of textured black surfaces, refined hardware details and robust worktops creates a cohesive, modern kitchen that feels engineered to last. Rotpunkt’s Raw Kitchen in Black Sandblasted Wood finish, as pictured, is priced from £20,000 + VAT.
