Deck Refinishing Guide: Top Techniques to Restore Your Deck

Harsh weather and daily wear take their toll on outdoor decking, so most decks need refinishing every few years to stay in good condition. With the right supplies and a weekend’s work, this is a manageable DIY project for many homeowners.

At first glance, refinishing a deck resembles stripping and repainting cabinets or furniture: you start by exposing a clean, bare surface. There are a few effective cleaning methods. A power washer can speed the job, but a stiff-bristle brush paired with an outdoor cleaner such as OxiClean also works well. Whatever method you choose, make sure the wood is thoroughly cleaned and completely dry before moving on.
After cleaning, use a chemical stripper if needed to remove any remaining stain or sealant that won’t come off with washing. Follow the product instructions carefully and allow adequate drying time. Once the old finish has been removed and the surface is dry, you can apply a new finish. Hardware stores carry a wide range of options, including clear, semi-transparent, tinted, and fully pigmented stains and sealers.

Select a stain based on the look you want and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. Clear and semi-transparent finishes highlight the wood’s natural grain but typically require more frequent reapplication—often every one to two years in exposed climates. More opaque stains provide greater UV protection and can last up to around four years, depending on local weather and sun exposure.
For application, a sprayer or a paint roller with an extension handle is usually the most efficient way to get an even coat across wide surfaces. A sprayer covers railings, balusters, and other hard-to-reach areas quickly, while a roller is ideal for larger deck boards. Use a quality brush for cutting in edges and for touch-ups where precision is needed. Work methodically, following the grain of the wood, and avoid overapplying the product to prevent puddling or uneven color.
Plan your project for a stretch of dry weather and moderate temperatures, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for dry times between coats. Proper preparation and application will extend the life of your deck finish and keep the wood looking its best.
