Truck bed covers significantly increase the utility of pickup trucks. They secure belongings, protect tools and gear from weather, and help organize cargo. After buying a 2021 Ram 2500, one of the first upgrades I chose was a bed cover.

RetraxPRO XR Truck Bed Cover
With many options on the market, I ultimately chose the RetraxPRO XR and have been very pleased. This system met my requirements for durability, functionality, and cargo optimization. Installation took about an hour and was far easier with two people helping.
If you want a high-quality cover designed to last the life of the truck, the RetraxPRO XR deserves serious consideration. Retrax offers several series to match different needs and budgets. The PRO series uses aluminum slats, the ONE series uses polycarbonate, and the XR includes the Trax Rail System—unlike the MX series. Both PRO and XR are available with a power option that opens and closes the cover with a button on a key fob, which is very convenient.

Bed Cover Construction
The RetraxPRO is built heavy-duty. Thick aluminum slats and sealed ball-bearing rollers glide smoothly along the tracks. The simple, robust design minimizes potential failure points—there are no exposed springs or complex mechanisms that can jam. The matte black finish resists scratches, and the cover supports up to 500 lbs of evenly distributed weight.

Bed Cover Security

The cover includes a lock—operable by key or latch—that secures cargo and allows the cover to be stopped at any position along the bed. The lock and latch are recessed and sit flush with the cover, creating a clean, streamlined appearance while keeping items safe.

Trax Rail System

The integrated Trax Rail System is a standout feature that set the XR series apart for me. It accepts T-slot accessories from many major rack manufacturers, so you can add crossbars and mount bikes, kayaks, cargo baskets, or other gear above the bed. That flexibility—carrying larger items overhead while still securing other gear inside the bed—was a key advantage for my camping and outdoor needs.
Low Profile

The cover sits almost flush with the bed, with the rails rising only slightly—about a half-inch—to accommodate the Trax Rail System. Edge seals are effective, keeping the bed dry during wet weather and maintaining a clean, low-profile look.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m very satisfied with this bed cover. While the roll-up canister occupies some bed space, the cover remains streamlined and leaves ample room for smaller items underneath the canister. The aluminum construction offers excellent durability, though the rails and slats can become very hot in direct summer sun—so be cautious when touching them after prolonged exposure.
