The pinnacle project for many DIY enthusiasts is building a house. If that sounds daunting, here’s a simpler option to consider.

The Tata Group has introduced an affordable flatpack home priced at $720 that can be assembled in just one week. The compact unit measures 215 square feet and uses sustainable materials such as coconut fiber or jute for its walls and interior finishes. According to reporting by Ariel Schwartz for Fast Company, the structure has a projected lifespan of about 20 years.
While this is not a luxury residence, the small prefabricated design could serve several practical uses: a backyard studio, a private home office, a guest room, or a tiny retreat. Its quick assembly and low cost also make it a compelling option for temporary or emergency housing in communities that need affordable shelter solutions. The kit includes key components such as windows, doors, roofing, and other essential elements to complete the unit.
There is potential for expanded models as well. Fast Company notes that Tata may offer a larger version in the future, possibly featuring rooftop solar panels and a veranda for increased comfort and energy efficiency.
