Clopay Joins the Mod Squad: Modern Garage Door Upgrades

Clopay will present its latest garage door designs at next week’s International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas. These new models combine striking contemporary and mid-century modern aesthetics with advanced features, redefining how a garage door can complement modern architecture. Homeowners and builders who value clean lines, refined materials and innovative technology will find much to admire in the new collection.

For the second consecutive year, Clopay is sponsoring The New American Home and will have four of its doors installed there. Builders and attendees are invited to tour the home, which showcases the newest trends and technologies in residential construction. Pat Lohse, Clopay’s vice president of marketing, highlights the Avante series: “The most striking feature of the Clopay Avante doors is the etched glass design, which controls the amount of natural light while maintaining privacy. As daylight shifts, the doors take on different appearances and, when lit from inside at night, produce a warm, welcoming glow.”

If you cannot visit The New American Home, you can see Clopay’s newest models at their trade show booth (#C1062). The company will display contemporary designs that demonstrate its custom capabilities in both wood and steel construction.

Among the new offerings is the Model 9205 black ribbed panel contemporary door. Painting a steel door black has historically posed thermal concerns, but Clopay’s thermal-reflective paint technology reduces surface temperatures and heat absorption, making dark finishes more viable in sun-exposed installations.

The 9205 is built with a three-layer insulated construction and can be upgraded with Intellicore® insulation to reach an 18.4 R-value. It also includes Clopay’s WindCode® Storm-Ready® reinforcement for coastal and high-wind areas. Decorative window layouts are available in long or short panel configurations, and a matching contemporary black entry door with frosted glass is offered to coordinate the overall facade.

Clopay is also emphasizing its custom wood garage door program. The company has been producing natural wood doors since 1964, and wood remains a favorite among architects and custom builders because of its flexibility: it can be tailored to match a home’s aesthetic and integrate seamlessly with other exterior elements.

Clopay’s in-house craftsmen produce each custom wood door to the project specifications and assist builders and designers in selecting the appropriate wood species and finishes for the desired look and longevity. These doors are crafted to harmonize with architectural intent, offering a high level of customization in panel patterns, hardware and glazing options.

“With wood, the options are virtually limitless,” Lohse explains. “A custom garage door can become a piece of art. And since it’s the door we all come home to, why shouldn’t it be as beautiful as the rest of your dream home?”

Clopay’s new lineup demonstrates a balance of form and function—advanced insulation, storm reinforcement and thermal paint technology combined with refined materials and customizable aesthetics. Whether the project calls for a sleek black steel door, a handcrafted wood entrance, or a contemporary aluminum and glass composition, the company’s offerings reflect current architectural trends while addressing real performance needs.
