‘Tis the season to decorate your home for the holidays, and many people choose a real Christmas tree as the centerpiece of their decorations. Real trees offer a fresh, fragrant presence that artificial trees often lack, but they also require proper care to stay hydrated and to reduce the risk of fire.

If you’ve chosen a live tree, follow these practical tips to keep it fresh throughout the season.
Choose the Right Stand
Use a reservoir-style stand that can hold enough water to keep the tree hydrated. A stand with a wide, stable water reservoir reduces the need for constant refilling and helps the trunk draw water more consistently.
Make a Fresh Cut
Just before placing the tree in the stand, cut a half-inch slice off the base of the trunk. This fresh cut removes any sealed sap and reopens the tree’s pores so it can absorb water. Avoid cutting the trunk into a V shape; a straight, even cut fits more securely in the stand and allows better water uptake.
Keep It Well-Watered
Maintain an ample water supply in the stand. The National Christmas Tree Association recommends allowing one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter. Check the water level daily, especially during the first week after bringing the tree home, when its water needs are highest.
Control the Environment
Position the tree away from heat sources such as radiators, heating vents, fireplaces and direct sunlight. Reducing the room temperature slightly, when comfortable, can also slow the tree’s drying process and extend its freshness.
Monitor Freshness and Recycle Properly
Keep an eye on the tree’s condition. If the tree becomes dry or brittle, remove it from your home to minimize fire risk. Many communities offer tree recycling programs—check realchristmastrees.org and enter your ZIP code to find nearby drop-off or curbside pickup options.
Dispose Safely
Never burn any part of a live Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood-burning stove. Dry trees ignite easily and can produce dangerous sparks or chimney fires.
Will you choose a natural or an artificial tree this year? Consider your priorities—scent, tradition and environmental recycling options for live trees, or the low-maintenance convenience and reusability of artificial trees—when making your decision.
