Winter Essentials to Stock Up Before the Cold Hits

Yes — the dreaded “w” word is on its way. For many parts of the country, freezing temperatures, snow and ice will arrive before you know it. Instead of waiting for last-minute demand to spike, now is the time to visit your local hardware store and stock up on winter essentials so you can avoid the crowds and the shortages.
What you need will depend on your region. In the Midwest, the Great Plains and the northern stretches of both coasts, de-icing products, ice scrapers and car covers are smart purchases. Snow shovels, sand or traction grit, and antifreeze are also practical items to have on hand for both vehicle and home preparedness.

I learned the value of early preparation the hard way. A few winters ago my fiancé’s car slid onto a patch of ice in our apartment lot. We drove to multiple big-box stores and even several gas stations searching for salt or ice melt — but everything was sold out. An unexpected storm had overwhelmed the area, and commercial buyers, including the local school district, had already emptied supply shelves.
Spend a little time now to assemble emergency kits for your car and house so you’re ready if you become stranded or lose power. Bottled water, flashlights, spare batteries, a well-stocked first-aid kit and nonperishable snacks will help you stay safe and comfortable during a storm. A basic kit and a few thoughtful supplies can make a big difference when winter weather strikes.
