Is your truck bed hurricane-proof? GMC chose a dramatic way to showcase the strength of its new CarbonPro bed: a commercial that slams objects into the bed at hurricane-force speeds. That spot premiered during the NFL playoffs earlier this year and generated a lot of attention.
Truck beds endure heavy abuse in daily use. While older steel beds were often paired with removable plastic liners, most owners now expect permanent protection such as spray-on coatings like Line-X that add durability and help resist corrosion.

Manufacturers have been experimenting with different bed materials and designs. Ford introduced aluminum beds across its F-150 line in 2015 to reduce weight, a move that sparked debate over trade-offs between lightness and long-term toughness.
GMC’s CarbonPro bed emphasizes toughness while offering significant weight savings. GMC describes the CarbonPro as highly resistant to dents, scratches and corrosion, and about 25 percent lighter than a comparable steel bed. That weight reduction can improve fuel economy and, according to GMC, removes the need for a separate bed liner.
This hurricane-speed impact video is just one of several tests GMC used to prove the CarbonPro’s durability. The company also subjected the bed to repetitive cinder block drops from increasing heights, dropped 450-pound steel drums into the bed, exposed the surface to hot exhaust from a running generator, and ran a snowmobile track across the bed surface. Those extreme trials were designed to demonstrate resistance to impact, abrasion and heat under demanding conditions.

Alongside the CarbonPro bed, GMC’s MultiPro tailgate remains a standout innovation. Together, these features show GMC’s focus on practical, user-centered truck technology—designs intended to improve durability and utility for owners who rely on their trucks for work and recreation.
The CarbonPro bed will be offered as an option on GMC Sierra models this year, giving buyers a lighter, tough alternative to traditional steel beds.
