Prepare the Lawn Properly
At the start of the season, aerate and dethatch the turf to relieve soil compaction and remove excess organic buildup. About a week after aeration and dethatching, apply a granular fertilizer that combines roughly 50 percent slow-release and 50 percent quick-release nutrients. Spread the fertilizer in the late afternoon while the turf is dry, then water immediately to activate it. Keep the surface consistently moist following aeration, since exposed roots and crowns dry out faster and need slightly more frequent watering during recovery.
Maintain Proper Mowing Height
Mowing at the correct height for your grass species is essential. Although grass varieties differ by region, most home turf performs well at about two to three inches. Mow as needed—generally once or twice weekly—to avoid scalping and to keep an even, healthy surface.
Check Irrigation Periodically
If you have an irrigation system, inspect it regularly to ensure sprinkler heads rotate properly and that pipes and valves aren’t leaking. Without an installed system, use a portable sprinkler and hose. Water requirements depend on grass type, temperature, soil texture, yard slope and other factors; monitor the turf daily and water when the soil and grass indicate it’s needed. Aim to keep the root zone adequately hydrated without overwatering.
Care for Lawn Equipment
Properly maintained tools make a big difference. Keep mower blades sharp, check oil and other fluids, and clean equipment after each use. A dull blade tears leaves rather than cutting them cleanly, which leads to a ragged appearance and can stress the grass. Regular tune-ups ensure safe, efficient operation and a better finish on your lawn.
Finish with Detail Work
After mowing, add finishing touches to elevate the overall look: trim beneath shrubs, prune hedges, and create clean edges around lawns and flower beds. Use a string trimmer, edger and cordless pruner to reach tight spots and maintain a balanced, neat appearance. If weeds are a recurring issue, consider a preventive pre-emergent herbicide chosen for the weeds you’re most likely to face—identify the weed species before applying and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Throughout the season, inspect the lawn frequently and remove weeds as soon as they appear. For established or spreading weeds, spot-treat with a post-emergent herbicide when necessary, taking care to follow label instructions for safe and effective use.
