We’ve used the Flip Ultra HD video camera for about two months and have been genuinely impressed. While we don’t usually cover gadgets, this compact camcorder stands out for delivering excellent video quality and an effortless user experience at a reasonable price.
Although many point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs now offer HD recording, the Flip Ultra HD excels by focusing on the essentials. It’s built for quick, high-quality video capture without complicated menus or extra features you rarely use.
Stripped-down simplicity
The design emphasizes simplicity: a fixed lens on the front with no moving parts, and a minimal control layout on the back. You’ll find a prominent red record button, a four-way dial for zoom and playback navigation, plus dedicated play and delete buttons. That’s it—no clutter, no confusion.
Because the camera powers on and starts recording almost instantly, you won’t miss spontaneous moments wrestling with settings. The straightforward controls make recording intuitive for users of any experience level.

Practical and enjoyable
Transferring footage is simple: the Flip’s built-in USB plug slides out of the body and connects directly to your computer. The supplied software is user-friendly, though we often import clips using Picasa without issue. This plug-and-play approach removes friction from sharing and archiving videos.
We tested the 8 GB model, which records roughly two hours of video and is priced around $199. This version captures 720p HD video at 60 fps and includes image stabilization for smoother footage. A 4 GB model is also available with about one hour of recording time; it records in 720p but at a lower frame rate and lacks stabilization, typically at a lower price point.
The Flip’s battery life is the only notable drawback—while adequate for casual use, heavier recording sessions may require recharging more often than some competitors. Beyond that, the camera’s strengths are its portability, ease of use, and consistent video quality.
Keep in mind the Flip focuses on core recording features and does not offer onboard editing beyond a basic digital zoom. For users who want quick, no-fuss capture in a compact package, it’s an excellent choice and makes a thoughtful gift for hobbyists, travelers, or parents who want to preserve life’s moments without complexity.
