Last month we joined Can-Am for a family off-road adventure in Moab, Utah. The event gave us a chance to explore some of the region’s best trails in both a capable stock Can-Am Maverick Sport and an extensively modified Can-Am Maverick X3. The experience was fast, fun, and unforgettable.

TAV Expedition UTVs
While out on the trails we met the team from TAV (Tactical Application Vehicles). Known for building rugged Toyota overlanding rigs and off-road specials, TAV is now applying that same craftsmanship to expedition UTVs and side-by-sides. Their collaboration with Can-Am and Multicam resulted in a Maverick X3 build that stands out for capability, attention to detail, and purposeful design.

TAV’s expedition-focused approach turns a high-performance side-by-side into a true overland machine: integrated storage solutions, durable exterior protection, thoughtfully arranged recovery gear, and rooftop accommodations where needed. These conversions emphasize reliability, practicality, and the ability to stay in the backcountry longer and more comfortably.

This Maverick X3 build also highlights the value of partnerships. Industry brands contributed parts and expertise to create a machine that’s attractive, functional, and ready for long-distance trail travel. We were impressed by how well the components work together to improve usability without compromising the vehicle’s core performance.
A big thanks to the partners involved in the Multicam Maverick project:
Can-Am
Multicam
Front Runner Outfitters
James Baroud
S3 Powersports
EFX Tires
DMOS Collective
KMC UTV
KC HiLites
Dometic
Zarges
The build combines weatherproof storage, premium rooftop equipment, off-road lighting, heavy-duty wheels and tires, and functional exterior racks. Each element is chosen to enhance a multi-day adventure: secure gear stowage, quick access to recovery tools, efficient cargo capacity, and reliable sleeping solutions for remote campsites.
Photography from Matt Ritscher and Timothy Dahl captured both the excitement of the ride and the thoughtful details in the build. Below are highlights from the trip, showcasing the Maverick X3 on trail, loaded for expedition duty, and parked against Moab’s iconic red-rock backdrop.

If you’re interested in expedition builds for UTVs, look for integrative designs that prioritize storage organization, recovery readiness, and modularity. The best conversions add useful capability while keeping maintenance straightforward and preserving the vehicle’s core performance—exactly the balance this Maverick X3 build achieves.
We came away from Moab excited about what’s possible when experienced builders and trusted parts manufacturers collaborate. The Maverick X3 shown here proves that side-by-sides can be both thrilling trail machines and practical expedition platforms, ready to carry people and gear deep into the backcountry.
