Planning a bathroom renovation? Begin with a clear plumbing diagram. A precise layout helps ensure that fixtures, drains, and water lines are placed correctly and work with your home’s existing supply and waste systems.
To get started, gather a tape measure, paper, pencils, a notepad, and a chalk line.
+ Start in the bathroom and measure the entire room. Note wall-to-wall dimensions, ceiling height, and the locations of doors and windows. Record each measurement in your notepad, then use the chalk line to mark where the new fixtures—sink, toilet, shower or tub—and faucets will be positioned.
+ While drawing your plumbing diagram, confirm whether your home is connected to the municipal water system or relies on a septic system. This affects how waste will be handled and where connections are required.
+ Identify the main soil or drainage stack in your house—the vertical pipe that collects waste from sinks, toilets, and showers on that level. Measure and record the distance from that stack to the nearest street drain or main sewer connection point. During demolition and rough-in plumbing, this is the place where your new lines will tie into the existing system.
