When we moved into our new home, we used the garage as a staging area while bringing boxes and furniture inside. The house filled up before we could finish clearing the garage, and rather than crowding the interior with items we only use occasionally, we decided to install an overhead garage shelving system. It would keep our belongings protected and out of the way, off the floor and out of closets.
We first noticed Fleximount overhead garage shelving on the Kim Six Fix blog and realized it matched our storage needs perfectly. The shelving dramatically reduced clutter in her garage, which actually had a lower ceiling than ours. After contacting Fleximount, they provided three overhead storage units for our use. We chose two 3 x 6 shelves and one 3 x 8 shelf to maximize storage without overwhelming the space.
Our two-car garage effectively fits one car once you account for tool cabinets, camping gear, and sports equipment. Fortunately, the rear section of the garage has a ceiling raised by about five feet, dramatically increasing usable volume and making that area ideal for overhead storage.
We began by installing the 3 x 8-foot shelf first. The instructions were straightforward and all necessary hardware was included. The components felt heavy-duty — from the bolts used to assemble the shelf to the hanging brackets — everything was solid and built to last.
The first step was marking where the ceiling brackets would attach. The system requires anchoring into wood studs, so we used a stud finder and measured 16 inches between studs to locate each mounting point. Fleximount racks can also be adapted for concrete ceilings with appropriate anchors.
We pre-drilled holes for the bolts and used an impact driver to secure the brackets to the ceiling. After deciding how low we wanted the shelves to hang, we kept them flush with the lower section of the raised ceiling — this maximized storage space and provided a clean, unobtrusive look. The unit’s adjustable height ranges from 22 to 40 inches, allowing plenty of flexibility to fit different garage layouts and vehicle clearance needs.
After the brackets were mounted, the shelf dropped into place and was secured to the bracket bottoms. The unit felt very stable and well-anchored; we had complete confidence in the installation’s strength and safety.
We loaded the racks with camping gear, fans, and baby items — things we wanted easy access to but didn’t need weekly or monthly. Having these items up overhead freed floor space and made the garage feel much more organized.
We considered building custom overhead shelves, but that DIY route would have taken more time and work than we had available. These ready-to-install Fleximount shelves were installed in just a few hours and delivered a finished look that surpassed what we could have built on our own.
If you’re looking to reclaim floor space and organize seasonal or occasional-use items, Fleximount overhead garage storage shelves are a practical, sturdy solution that makes the most of vertical space.
