John Deere is synonymous with agricultural work. Its iconic green-and-yellow tractors are fixtures in fields worldwide, and the company also offers a line of utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) called Gators. Built to handle demanding tasks on ranches, farms, and worksites, the Gator lineup brings tractor-grade durability in a compact, maneuverable package.
We spent a month testing the all-new 2021 John Deere XUV865M Gator at Sandy Valley Ranch to evaluate whether it could withstand long days and the varied demands of ranch work.

Why a UTV Matters on the Ranch
On our ranch we rely on a Case loader for the heaviest hauling and digging, and an older Polaris ATV that has proven invaluable for hauling feed and moving around the property. A side-by-side UTV fills the gap between these two machines. It combines a useful cargo capacity with comfortable, all-day usability and better maneuverability in tight areas.
Specifically, the XUV865M has a cargo box capable of carrying up to 1,000 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds, yet it’s narrow and agile enough to work between stalls and in confined spaces.

Primary uses at our ranch include feeding livestock—horses, cattle, goats, pigs, and the occasional pony or mule. With a UTV, a fully loaded feed trailer can service the whole ranch in a single circuit. Later in the day, a separate trailer can be used for stall cleanup and hauling manure to a designated disposal area.

The second key role for a UTV is transporting people and gear. Wranglers frequently move saddles, tack, tools, and fencing materials across the property. A reliable, comfortable side-by-side streamlines these daily chores and saves time.
What Makes the New Gator Stand Out
Ranch life includes beautiful moments—watching a foal take its first steps, enjoying a sunset ride—but it also depends on countless practical tasks. Without the right tools, things quickly become difficult. The XUV865M brings a set of features that make routine work easier and more efficient.
Comfort
Comfort is an often-overlooked advantage of John Deere Gators. The seats and riding position are designed for extended use, providing support for long days of getting in and out of the vehicle. While seat design may not appear on a spec sheet, John Deere’s decades of experience crafting seats for farm equipment show in the comfort and support provided.

Driveability

The new Gators are easy to operate. Getting in and starting one feels familiar to anyone used to driving a car. Controls, handling, and the instrument panel are intuitive and car-like in a beneficial way. The Gator maintains composure at higher speeds and makes it simple to engage four-wheel drive and a locking differential with the flip of a switch.
Differential Lock for Challenging Conditions
A differential lock provides equal power to both wheels on an axle, delivering superior traction in tricky conditions. With the diff-lock engaged, you’re far less likely to get stuck in mud or sand with a single spinning wheel. It also helps when towing heavier loads across slippery or steep terrain, improving control and reducing strain on the vehicle.
Flip-Up Windshield

The flip-up windshield adds practical comfort in hot climates. On 115-degree days it allows airflow to cool occupants naturally; when conditions call for protection from dust or debris, the windshield flips back down to shield riders while traveling faster.
Extensive Accessory Options

The new Gator supports more than 100 attachments, from snow blades and winches to sprayers and specialty implements. This accessory ecosystem makes the Gator a year-round tool for diverse jobs. On a desert ranch, a winch becomes a high-priority accessory to avoid relying on a truck-mounted winch for every recovery or heavy pull.
TrueTimber Camo Option
Beyond the classic John Deere green and olive finishes, the XUV865M is now offered in TrueTimber camo for 2021. This color choice broadens the vehicle’s appeal for hunting and trail use while retaining its rugged, utility-focused design. There isn’t a “murdered-out” black option in this model year, but the camo gives riders more versatility in appearance and use.
After our month with the Gator, the crew was disappointed to see it go. It quickly became a favorite tool among ranch staff for its comfort, capability, and adaptability. For now, we’ll make do with our ATV, but having a Gator available made many tasks faster and less strenuous.
