Keen is widely recognized for making comfortable, durable hiking boots and sandals. Those same strengths extend to their work boot line, Keen Utility. Built for long days on your feet—standing, walking, and working in varied conditions—these boots emphasize comfort, protection, and longevity. To evaluate their Made in America options, we tested two 6″ models: the Mt. Vernon 6″ soft toe and the Braddock 6″ steel toe.
After several months of regular use in our workshop—on truck repairs and heavier woodworking projects—these Keen boots have become the most comfortable work boots we’ve owned. Previously, the Danner Vicious held that spot, but both Keen models feel more durable and offer better toe protection and supportive construction than many other work boots we’ve tried. While we hadn’t worn Keen before and their sandals never appealed to us, the reinforced cap toe and straightforward styling of these work boots make them clearly purpose-built.
Both the Mt. Vernon and the Braddock handled workshop tasks well. The 6″ height gives confident ankle support, and the toe reinforcement means you can be reasonably sure your toes would survive an accidental drop of a heavy object like a 6×6 or a tire rim. Both models are waterproof, so your feet stay dry in bad weather—something that makes a significant difference on long job days, even in drier climates like Los Angeles.
Fit-wise, these boots are true to size. The practical distinctions come down to design details and preference. The Mt. Vernon offers increased ankle support and two top lacing eyelets versus the Braddock’s single top eyelet. We also like the brass eyelets on the Mt. Vernon for their look, although in practice we tend to reach for the Braddock more often and have spent more hours in that pair. At $190 each, both boots represent strong value for the construction and materials, and we expect they’ll last for years with proper care. We’re proud these models are assembled in Portland, Oregon, and we’ll be visiting the factory soon to see the assembly process in person.
We also tried the women’s Mesa ESD steel toe, a low-profile work shoe that’s lightweight and well suited for DIYers or anyone working in warmer environments. Keen’s range of women’s work shoes and boots provides a variety of styles, colors, and designs to match different preferences and job needs.
