Since leaving Tucson after college, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the city and want to share some of the qualities that make this community special. My parents settled in Tucson more than fifty years ago and recently served the community as ministers at Unity of Tucson. Here are the reasons I love Tucson, Arizona.

The Weather
It’s a cliché, but for most of the year Tucson’s weather is exceptional. Summers can be intensely hot, but many prefer a dry 115°F day to humid 95°F temperatures. The long stretches of sunshine make it easy to enjoy outdoor life and plan activities year-round.

The Outdoors
Tucson’s natural surroundings invite exploration whenever the sun is out. Sabino Canyon, at the base of the Catalina Mountains, features a creek that runs through the canyon and offers scenic hikes and shaded areas. The diversity of native plants, cacti, and wildlife is impressive, especially so close to an urban center.

Mt. Lemmon provides a cool retreat during the summer months, with extensive hiking, biking, climbing, and camping opportunities throughout the region. From quiet desert trails to higher-elevation forests, Tucson offers outdoor experiences for every level and interest.

University of Arizona
As an alum, I’m biased, but the University of Arizona is a top-tier public university that contributes richly to Tucson’s culture and energy. Beyond the athletics that draw regional attention, the university excels academically and continues to grow and innovate. The campus is vibrant—spend an afternoon on the “mall” during the school year and you’ll feel the lively academic and social atmosphere.

People
Having lived in New York and Los Angeles, I appreciate the warmth and everyday friendliness you find in Tucson. Service interactions and neighborhood encounters generally feel genuine and helpful. While urban centers often cultivate rushed or terse attitudes, Tucson’s residents tend to be welcoming and easygoing in their daily interactions.

Atmosphere
Tucson maintains a relaxed, approachable vibe without feeling stagnant. The city’s pace is calm and restorative rather than hectic, and it supports upscale hospitality—several notable resorts and spas call the area home, reflecting the city’s appeal as a destination for relaxation and wellness. Many people come for the climate and stay for the friendly, unhurried atmosphere.
