We spent a day at Etsy’s offices in DUMBO, the Brooklyn neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and creative energy. The visit offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the people, spaces, and culture that support a global marketplace for handmade and vintage goods. What follows is a descriptive, photo-driven account of that day—capturing the atmosphere, design details, and the ways Etsy’s team fosters creativity and community.
Arriving at the Etsy campus, the first thing that stands out is how the office design blends industrial Brooklyn character with warm, handcrafted touches. Exposed brick, high ceilings, and large windows let in plenty of natural light, while curated workspaces and cozy meeting nooks create a balance between openness and intimacy. The décor emphasizes texture and materiality—wood finishes, woven fabrics, and plants give the space an approachable, lived-in feel that echoes Etsy’s brand values.
The layout encourages collaboration. Open-plan desks sit alongside smaller private rooms and plenty of casual seating for informal conversations. Bright, maker-focused artwork and product displays are integrated throughout, turning circulation routes into small galleries that highlight the work of sellers. These displays do more than decorate: they remind employees daily of the marketplace they serve and the creative people behind each listing.
Meeting rooms are intentionally varied to support different kinds of work. Some rooms are sparse and minimal, designed for focused planning or video calls. Others are more playful, with patterned wallpaper, eclectic furniture, and tactile finishes to stimulate brainstorming. Whiteboards and writable surfaces are common, making it easy for teams to sketch ideas and iterate quickly. In one corner, a comfortable lounge area filled with cushions and low tables invites informal meetups and cross-team conversations.
Employee amenities reflect an emphasis on wellbeing and community. There are quiet rooms and wellness spaces where staff can take a break, meditate, or do brief stretches. The kitchen areas are stocked to encourage shared meals and casual interaction, with long tables that foster conversation across departments. Small touches—like communal herb planters and locally sourced snacks—reinforce a sense of neighborhood and purpose.
The campus also includes display areas dedicated to Etsy sellers. Carefully arranged product showcases rotate regularly, featuring ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and other handmade goods. These displays are lit to highlight craftsmanship and are accompanied by brief descriptions that tell the maker’s story. This ongoing curation keeps the office connected to the marketplace and offers daily inspiration for employees.
Throughout the day, we encountered a range of employees—from product designers and engineers to community managers and seller advocates—each bringing distinct perspectives on how to improve the platform. Conversations emphasized a shared focus on empowering small businesses and creating meaningful buyer-seller connections. Teams regularly leverage seller feedback and data-driven insights to refine features, improve search, and optimize the buying experience.
Technology plays a supporting role, integrated smoothly into the environment without overwhelming it. Workstations are equipped with tools for remote collaboration and testing, while prototypes and user research artifacts are displayed alongside finished products. This mix of hands-on craft and digital experimentation reflects how Etsy supports makers both online and offline.
One notable impression is the careful attention to sustainability and responsible operations. The office design incorporates recycled materials and energy-conscious fixtures, and there are initiatives to reduce waste and support ethical sourcing. Sustainability shows up in small but consistent ways—from upcycled furniture to programs that encourage low-impact commutes.
The overall culture felt intentionally human-centered. Leadership appears invested in maintaining an environment where creativity thrives, and where teams can iterate without losing sight of the people they serve. Regular events, internal showcases, and maker visits help maintain that connection, ensuring that the marketplace remains grounded in authentic craftsmanship.
