I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Kansas City we’re headed into a chilly, rainy weekend — the perfect excuse to tackle a few DIY projects.
The latest project on my list is invisible floating shelves. They’re simple, stylish, and versatile: perfect beside a bed, in a living room, or in a home office. I’m thinking of making several and arranging them together to turn my book collection into a curated display.

For a full step-by-step guide, refer to the tutorial from CasaSugar. Before you begin, keep a few practical tips in mind:
- You’ll need a “sacrificial book” to form the shelf base. A sturdy hardback works best because it provides a solid surface to conceal the bracket.
- Make sure the shelf is securely anchored. Locate a wall stud before you hang the shelf — use a stud finder or the old-fashioned knock-and-listen method to find a secure mounting point.
- To maintain the invisible effect, stack books or items high enough to cover the bracket completely once the shelf is installed.
Invisible shelves are a clever way to add storage that feels light and modern while giving your books and decorative objects a gallery-like presence. They’re an economical, high-impact DIY that can change the look of a room with minimal effort.
Will you try making invisible shelves? If you do, I’d love to hear how they turn out — I’ll share updates on my own progress too.
