Driveable Grass Paver System for Durable, Green Surfaces

We’re enthusiastic about permeable concrete and sustainable driveway solutions, and when we discovered the Drivable Grass system by Soil Retention at the Builders’ Show, we had to take a closer look.

Drivable Grass is a paving solution designed as an alternative to standard concrete or asphalt for driveways, patios, and parking areas that need to support cars, RVs, and boats. The system blends the structural support of a paving mat with the environmental benefits of living vegetation, creating a stable, permeable surface that encourages grass growth while handling vehicle loads.

The product consists of a flexible concrete paving mat engineered to conform to uneven ground. Predefined linear grooves allow the mat to flex without cracking or breaking apart, while purposely placed openings enable roots to penetrate from the surface into the subgrade soil. This root access secures the mat in place and supports healthy turf growth through the paving.

Because the mat is pervious, water can pass through the surface and into the underlying soil. This permeability increases on-site stormwater storage and reduces runoff, helping to manage stormwater naturally and lessen pressure on municipal drainage systems. In comparison to conventional impervious surfaces such as concrete or asphalt, Drivable Grass supports better groundwater recharge and decreases surface water flow.

Installation can be accomplished as a do-it-yourself project or by hiring a professional installer. The system is generally quicker to set up than traditional poured concrete combined with separate sod installation. It eliminates much of the extended curing time and heavy equipment required for standard concrete, and it avoids the long-term turf stress typical of solid concrete surfaces, where grass struggles to take root and often dies because there is no room or soil access beneath the slab.

The design intent of the Drivable Grass mat is to deliver a durable, low-impact alternative for property owners who want a green, functional surface. It suits residential driveways, overflow parking areas, RV pads, and boat-launch parking where periodic vehicle loads are expected but a softer, landscaped appearance is preferred. By blending structural support with living vegetation, the system maintains an attractive, natural look while fulfilling practical needs.

Beyond aesthetics and stormwater benefits, the vegetated paving approach can contribute to reduced heat island effects because living turf reflects and transpires heat differently than dark, dense materials like asphalt. It also supports soil health and can improve site biodiversity at a micro-scale by providing plant habitat within an otherwise hardscaped area.

For best results, proper subgrade preparation is important: grading, compaction, and an appropriate base layer help ensure even support and drainage. Choosing a grass species suited to local climate, light conditions, and anticipated wear will maximize turf resilience. Regular maintenance practices such as mowing, occasional topdressing, and irrigation when necessary help sustain a healthy surface that continues to perform structurally and visually.

Drivable Grass offers a practical compromise between the permanence of traditional paving and the ecological advantages of natural landscaping. It delivers quicker installation, permeable performance, and living cover that concrete slabs alone cannot provide, making it an appealing option for homeowners and property managers seeking greener, functional hardscape alternatives.
