Our Family Trip to the Texas Eclipse
Our rental began at Blacksford’s Las Vegas location under the care of Cindee, who added personal touches like a birthday banner for our youngest and road-friendly activities to keep the kids entertained. Her thorough orientation of the 2023 Winnebago Solis PX put us at ease—she explained the toilet, shower, hot water, climate controls, and packing tips in detail.
We drove from Las Vegas to Burnett, Texas for the eclipse. Though the local festival was canceled due to weather, we still witnessed 4 minutes and 23 seconds of totality from a beautiful riverside park—a spectacular and unforgettable moment.
Along the way, we stopped in Tucson, visited the quirky “Thing” in Benson, walked the otherworldly dunes at White Sands National Park, explored Carlsbad Caverns, and admired Marfa’s art scene. On the return leg we visited the Alamo, dined on San Antonio’s Riverwalk, spent a day in Austin, thrift-shopped in Albuquerque, enjoyed Pizzicleta in Flagstaff, and stood in awe at Meteor Crater in Arizona.
Those spontaneous roadside discoveries and nights boondocking were the trip’s highlights—experiences you rarely get with fly-and-stay vacations. Little moments, like an open-air shower on a rainy day in Austin or an impromptu stop at the Prada Marfa installation, made the journey special.
Cindee stayed available by phone or text throughout our trip, which removed much of the anxiety we felt as first-time RV renters.
Beyond sightseeing, the trip strengthened family bonds. It offered a welcome break from screens and routines and provided time together that produced lasting memories.
