Harley‑Davidson: Celebrating 110 Years of Freedom and Legacy

I had the opportunity to visit Milwaukee previously for a Milwaukee Tool media event, but this was my first visit to the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the first decade of the 20th century, Harley-Davidson was one of the two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression. The museum, which opened in 2008, is an architectural showcase and a tribute to everything Harley-Davidson: its history, culture, vehicles, and corporate archives.

Harleys receive prime parking directly in front of the museum, and there’s a hands-on exhibit that lets visitors straddle and start a real Harley that’s securely bolted down. That distinctive rumble sets the tone as you enter the galleries.

The first gallery focuses on engines. Visitors can listen to different engine sounds and test their ears to distinguish a lawnmower engine from a V-twin or a boxer engine.

The museum displays at least one Harley-Davidson motorcycle from nearly every year of the company’s history. Each bike is kept in pristine, ride-ready condition, reflecting pride in the brand’s racing heritage and the significant role Harley-Davidson motorcycles played in both World War I and World War II.

Harley-Davidson understands its status as an American cultural icon. The exhibits include famous bikes from pop culture—bikes associated with films like Easy Rider and the iconic Captain America chopper. There’s also a dedicated children’s area where kids can gear up in leather hats and vests and pretend to start their own Harley.

One of the standout sections is the design lab, which tracks Harley-Davidson motorcycles from initial concept through final assembly. The robotic welding arm on display is particularly mesmerizing and demonstrates the blend of craftsmanship and modern manufacturing techniques.

At the museum’s finish, visitors can sit on a variety of motorcycles and have their photos taken. Our younger visitor especially enjoyed the Harley scooter—so did we.

This weekend marks Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary, and Milwaukee will welcome riders from across the country and around the world. The city will host concerts and events, with the museum serving as the focal point. Organizers expect at least 200,000 fans and riders to gather for the celebration.

If Sturgis is a landmark event for motorcycle fans, the Harley-Davidson anniversary in Milwaukee is a must for anyone devoted to the brand—true hog heaven for Harley enthusiasts.
