We recently found that few things are more satisfying than deliberately pouring a mix of liquids onto a carpet sample and testing how it responds. Home Depot sent two carpet swatches featuring stain-resistant treatments, along with some common spill liquids, so we could see how well the fibers perform under real-world conditions.
One of the samples, Platinum Plus, is finished with Scotchgard technology, which the manufacturer describes as an invisible shield that repels liquids, dirt, and soil—making it suitable for high-traffic family rooms and busy household areas.

To test the claim, we used a tempting trio of V8 juice, chocolate milk, and Juicy Juice grape juice. We began by pouring V8 onto the light brown Platinum Plus swatch to see how the liquid behaved on the treated fibers.

Because of the Scotchgard finish, the V8 pooled on the surface instead of immediately soaking into the pile. When we tipped the swatch, the liquid rolled off the fibers, leaving only a thin, manageable residue. Obviously you can’t lift and tilt an installed carpet in a room, but the experiment clearly showed how the protective treatment keeps spills at the surface, making cleanup easier.

After blotting the area with a towel, the visible stain largely disappeared. The light brown shade of this Platinum Plus swatch is forgiving and helps conceal minor blemishes, which makes it a practical choice for living areas, family rooms, and other busy spaces.
We also tested a combined spill using all three liquids. This required more effort to blot and left the carpet damp longer, so it’s important to let treated areas dry thoroughly after cleaning. With adequate blotting and drying time, the Platinum Plus performed well and lived up to its stain-fighting claims.
At an approximate cost of $1.95 per square foot, Platinum Plus offers an affordable, attractive option for homeowners seeking stain resistance without sacrificing appearance. Its surface protection reduces the chance of deep-set stains and simplifies routine cleanup, making it a sensible pick for households with children, pets, or heavy foot traffic.
Keep an eye out for our next test: we’ll report on how the Martha Stewart Living carpet performs under similar conditions.
