How to Build a DIY Snow Ramp for Skiing and Snowboarding

Winter doesn’t mean the end of backyard projects. If you live where snowfall is reliable—or you’ve simply got more than enough snow to play with—consider building a DIY snow ramp to upgrade your sledding fun right at home.

Erin and her husband, who publish their projects on The Stucco Bungalow (where he’s affectionately called Handy Husband), took this idea to heart. With only a shallow accumulation of snow, they improvised instead of waiting for a bigger storm.

They began by stacking a few pieces of deck furniture into a low mound to form the ramp’s core. Then they piled and packed snow over the structure—an effort made much quicker thanks to Handy Husband’s new electric snow thrower. The furniture provided a sturdy base and conserved the limited snow they had.

After shaping the mound, they smoothed a sledding lane down the slope, packing it carefully to create a fast, even surface with fewer bumps. The result was a simple but effective backyard ramp that made sledding safer and more enjoyable for the whole family.

This project shows how a little creativity and resourcefulness can turn an ordinary winter day into an instant playground. Using existing materials as a foundation, combining them with compacted snow, and finishing with a well-packed sled track are all easy steps that deliver big fun without extensive tools or heavy snowfall.

If you try a similar build, focus on safety: choose a clear, obstacle-free area; make sure the base is stable; and pack the ramp and run-out area thoroughly to minimize unexpected jolts. Supervise children and consider a helmet for higher speeds. With those precautions, a DIY snow ramp can be an affordable way to make the most of winter right in your backyard.
