High-tech features are becoming standard in hand tools. Although DEWALT has discontinued its handheld wall radar scanner, the DEWALT 12V inspection camera offers a more practical and reliable way to inspect behind walls and reach confined spaces.
“During research by our Innovation Team, we heard many frustrations from users who work in buildings that lack an easy, reliable method to determine whether pipes, studs, or wiring are present behind a wall. As a result, we are introducing a solution we believe will be a game-changer in the industry,” said Christine Potter, DEWALT’s director of marketing.
Rather than relying solely on radar detection, sometimes the simplest method is to look directly where you need to work.
Begin with a Stud Finder
Start with a stud finder to locate studs and other hidden obstructions behind drywall. A basic stud finder is an inexpensive first step and helps you identify where something solid lies beneath the surface so you can avoid drilling or cutting into it.

Stud finders won’t tell you the exact nature of the obstruction, but they reliably indicate that there is material—wood, metal, or other—behind the wall that requires attention.
Use an Inspection Camera to Verify
After you locate a potential obstruction, drill a small inspection hole and use an inspection camera to see what’s actually inside the wall. The DEWALT DCT410S1 12V MAX Inspection Camera Kit, for example, removes the guesswork by allowing you to visually confirm whether you’re dealing with a stud, pipe, or ductwork.

The inspection camera kit includes a 12V battery, so it’s ready to use without needing additional power tools. Because it provides a direct visual, an inspection camera can be more accurate and reassuring than a radar-only scanner.
Beyond remodeling and construction, inspection cameras are also invaluable for plumbing and automotive tasks. Their versatility makes them useful across many trades and household tasks, unlike a dedicated wall scanner that is limited to scanning flat surfaces.

For contractors and DIYers alike, an inspection camera is a practical addition to the toolbox. It delivers clear, visual confirmation of hidden conditions and reduces the risk of costly mistakes. While the idea behind a handheld radar scanner was promising, the inspection camera’s flexibility and direct imaging make it the preferred solution for many professionals and homeowners.
