Install a Hammock for Deep, Restful Sleep Tonight

For several years I’ve kept a running list of features I envision for my dream home: a floor-to-ceiling library, a spacious kitchen, maybe even a hidden passage. One more item I’d add to that list is a hammock—perfect for a well-tended backyard.

Hammocks have long symbolized leisure. While they often evoke images of sandy beaches and tropical drinks, they also make an excellent backyard addition for anyone seeking a quiet spot to read, nap, or simply enjoy the outdoors.

There’s good reason to consider installing one. NPR highlighted research showing that hammocks can promote easier, deeper sleep. Swiss researchers found that the gentle rocking motion of a hammock helps people fall asleep more quickly and reach deeper stages of sleep.

Beyond faster sleep onset, the rhythmic motion influences brain activity during rest. Researchers observed an increase in N2 sleep—one stage of non-REM sleep that typically accounts for roughly half of a healthy night’s rest.

If you’re motivated to add a hammock to your home, there are several options to consider. Hammocks can be suspended between trees or mounted on posts. If you choose trees, be sure they are sturdy hardwoods with a minimum diameter of about 12 inches. For comfortable use and safety, hang the hammock roughly four feet above ground; a height of six to eight feet can work well depending on the setup and desired sag.

Do you already have a hammock at home? If not, do you plan to install one?
