We were recently alerted to a new product from DuPont that promises to solve the common problem of garden weeds.

DuPont’s WeedFree Premium landscape fabric is designed to provide a durable barrier against unwanted weeds while supporting the healthy growth of plants and shrubs. Constructed from spun-bonded polypropylene, this fabric forms a breathable membrane that resists punctures, fraying, and tearing. At the same time, it allows air, moisture, and nutrients to pass through, ensuring soil and roots receive what they need.
One major advantage of this fabric is that it removes the need for chemical weed killers, making it an excellent choice for organic gardens, play areas, or any space where reducing toxic inputs is a priority. It’s particularly suitable for families with children or pets because it minimizes exposure to herbicides. We plan to install the fabric this week as part of a new sandbox project and will report back on its performance.
Durability is a key selling point: with proper installation and coverage, the fabric should last through multiple seasons. Installation is straightforward—roll the fabric out over the prepared soil and cover it with 2 to 3 inches of mulch. DuPont backs the product with a 15-year warranty, giving added confidence in its longevity.
The fabric is available in several sizes to suit different garden needs: 3′ x 50′, 3′ x 100′, 3′ x 300′, and 6′ x 150′. These size options make it easy to choose a width and length appropriate for raised beds, pathways, planting areas, and larger landscape projects.
When selecting and installing landscape fabric, consider these tips for best results:
- Prepare the soil first by removing existing weeds, rocks, and debris.
- Lay the fabric flat and secure the edges with landscape staples or pins to prevent shifting.
- Cut holes or slits only where plants will be placed to maintain weed-blocking coverage elsewhere.
- Cover the fabric with a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, gravel, or decorative stone to protect it from UV exposure and to enhance appearance.
- Inspect periodically for any tears or gaps where weeds could establish and repair promptly.
WeedFree Premium’s combination of breathability, strength, and long warranty makes it a practical option for anyone looking to reduce maintenance and chemical use in their landscape. We’ll monitor how it holds up in our sandbox area and share our observations after several months of use.
