Over the past two years we’ve returned to experience the evolution of this peaceful sanctuary under the stewardship of founder Xorin Balbes. Once a Los Angeles–based interior design standout, Xorin relocated to Maui and transformed the historic property—formerly owned by the Baldwin family of Hawaii—into a thoughtfully designed wellness haven.
During our first visit it was difficult to picture Xorin’s vision, yet his intent was clear. Together with his design team, he realized a resort that balances tasteful historic restoration with modern, tranquil living.
From the property: Lumeria Maui represents a growing interest in edventure—educational adventure—travel. The six-acre private sanctuary overlooks the North Shore and features lush tropical and edible gardens, daily yoga and meditation classes, and an organic breakfast included with accommodations. Lumeria is designed for guests who want to unplug and restore through classes, outdoor adventures, and meaningful island experiences rather than a conventional resort stay. We found it hard to leave. Sitting on the porch and listening to the resort’s calming background music was pure relaxation. The central grass lawn creates an ideal space for large-format yoga and fitness sessions, while rooms and communal areas are carefully appointed to feel both peaceful and invigorating—an energy that sets this property apart on Maui.
Lumeria’s activity program covers a wide range: daily yoga and meditation, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons, and curated excursions, alongside nutritious and flavorful meals that reflect the farm-to-table ethos.
