We rang in 2011 with family and friends, enjoying a getaway to the Nevada desert and an overnight stay in Las Vegas. Below are practical travel tips from our trip and a few photos capturing the weekend.
Las Vegas Travel Tips
1. If you want to avoid heavy Los Angeles–area congestion when driving to Las Vegas on a Friday afternoon or returning on a Sunday, consider taking the Pearblossom Highway (CA‑138). The route offers a more scenic drive and helps you bypass much of the Inland Empire traffic.
2. While there are many excellent restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip, few can match the location of Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris Las Vegas hotel. If you can sit on the patio, you’ll have a front-row view of the Bellagio fountain show and excellent people-watching along the Strip. We had a heated outdoor table for ten, enjoyed a relaxed dinner, and took in what many consider one of the best shows in Vegas.
3. Fireworks can be legally purchased in Pahrump, NV, but note that they must be removed from Nye County within 24 hours of purchase. If you plan to buy fireworks for celebrations, check local rules and follow safety guidance.
4. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is a strong addition to the Strip. It’s especially appealing if you appreciate high-quality dining and a lively, more intimate nightlife atmosphere. The property contrasts with some of the larger, more impersonal mega-resorts and delivers a stylish, energetic experience.
5. For a break from the neon and casinos, consider a western-style day at Sandy Valley Ranch. They offer trail rides, dinners, and event hosting for parties or weddings—an inviting option for those who want a taste of the Nevada outdoors and cowboy culture.

We found the combination of desert scenery, relaxed moments with family, and the excitement of Las Vegas made for a memorable New Year celebration. Whether you’re focused on scenic driving routes, great dining with a view, or a quieter ranch escape, the Las Vegas area offers a range of options to suit different travel styles.
