With so many electric vehicles available today, the Polestar 2 deserves a spot on your shortlist.

I spent several days driving the Polestar 2 around Los Angeles—running errands, dropping the kids at school, and heading down to El Porto for a surf. I don’t own an EV yet, but this car made it clear why electric vehicles are such a breakthrough.

Why choose an electric vehicle?

I’ve tested a number of electric cars and I’m consistently impressed by the performance. Instant torque and smooth, immediate acceleration are a thrilling part of the EV experience. Beyond that, EVs eliminate the need to buy gasoline, lower maintenance costs, and typically reduce your environmental footprint.

Why the Polestar 2 stands out

The EV market is expanding fast, with new models appearing regularly. While there are many exciting newcomers, I prefer brands with automotive heritage and proven engineering. Polestar fits that bill: a Swedish electric brand that grew from Volvo’s engineering roots and now operates independently.

Polestar has established itself as a standalone EV maker and trades publicly as PSNY on the NASDAQ. That connection to Volvo gives confidence in build quality and safety while allowing Polestar to pursue a modern, electric-first design approach.

Polestar 2 pricing and specs

The Polestar 2 is a four-door fastback and the brand’s second production model. It offers an estimated range of roughly 260–270 miles on a full charge, depending on configuration and driving conditions. There are two primary trims: Long Range Single Motor (starting around $48,400 USD / $53,950 CAD) and Long Range Dual Motor (around $51,900 USD / $58,950 CAD).

In the U.S., the Polestar 2 currently qualifies for the federal electric vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500, which can significantly reduce the effective starting price.

The single-motor model produces around 231 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, with a 0–60 mph time near 7.0 seconds. The dual-motor version boosts output to about 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, dropping 0–60 mph time to roughly 4.45 seconds and delivering strong straight-line performance.

Both versions use a 78-kWh battery pack and support Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging. DC fast charging can replenish most of the battery in roughly 30 minutes at peak rates up to about 155 kW. A typical Level 2 home charger will take around eight hours from near empty to full.

Driving impressions

Now for the driving experience.

The Polestar 2 is richly equipped with technology, yet everything feels purposeful and straightforward. Unlike many modern cars whose controls can be confusing, this car’s interface and layout are intuitive and easy to use.

The large touchscreen responds quickly, with clear icons and an uncluttered arrangement. That simplicity makes it comfortable to operate on the road.

Most buyers will likely choose the single-motor model, which I sampled. Its combination of lower cost and longer range makes sense for daily driving. It still feels lively—there’s no need to mash the accelerator when merging, but ample power is available when you want it.

Driving in Los Angeles traffic felt surprisingly pleasant. The Polestar 2’s size and packaging make it well-suited to an active family of four: comfortable seating, useful cargo space for backpacks and gear, and a footprint that’s easy to park in tight spots—though you might still avoid cramped spaces to prevent door dings.

My test car had a sturdy roof rack for a surfboard. I didn’t notice any rattles or excessive wind noise, and the roof should accommodate common cargo boxes from brands like Thule or Yakima, adding versatility for outdoor gear.

Ownership and support

Polestar includes practical ownership benefits worth noting. New buyers receive two years of complimentary charging at Electrify America stations, which eases long-distance travel costs. The vehicle supports scheduled charging, letting you program charging times to take advantage of lower electricity rates.

Polestar provides over-the-air software updates, so features and systems can improve without a trip to a service center. The brand also offers home delivery and pickup for service in many areas—owners within roughly 150 miles of a Polestar Space may have their vehicle collected and returned for maintenance at no charge.

Recommended service intervals are modest—around every two years or 20,000 miles—meaning less frequent visits than many gasoline cars. Polestar also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 30,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

You can research, configure, test drive, and order a Polestar 2 online or visit a Polestar Space to complete the purchase and arrange home delivery.
