Staining and Sealing
After sanding, remove all dust by sweeping and vacuuming thoroughly. Proper cleanup is essential before applying any stain or finish. Choose a high-quality stain if you want to change or enhance the wood tone, and allow it to dry fully before sealing.
For sealing, water-based polyurethane is a popular choice. It dries quickly, has lower odor than oil-based alternatives, and provides durable protection against moisture and wear. Apply multiple thin coats according to the manufacturer’s instructions, sanding lightly between coats if recommended.
Allow adequate time for the project. Professionals may take up to a week to refinish a small home to achieve the best, long-lasting results. If you tackle the job yourself, plan for additional time for preparation, drying, and possible rework to ensure a high-quality finish.
