Top Overlanding Shovels for Off-Road Adventures

overlanding shovel

The Delta Shovel has become my go-to recovery tool for off-roading. Built to be strong, lightweight, and easy to store, this overlanding shovel is an excellent companion for day trips, extended overlands, and any situation where you might need to dig, clear, or recover a vehicle.

Why You Need a Shovel

Large tires and lifted suspensions can give you confidence on rough terrain, but they can also lead you into situations where you get stuck. Overconfidence in gear and setup is a common cause of trouble on the trail.

A winch is a valuable recovery device, but it’s expensive and requires training to use safely. A shovel, by contrast, is simple and effective: almost anyone can operate one to dig out a tire, clear a rut, or prepare terrain for traction aids.

In practical recovery scenarios you’ll use a shovel to clear mud, sand, or debris from around a tire, then place traction boards or recovery mats in front of the wheel to create grip so you can slowly drive free. Beyond vehicle recovery, an overlanding shovel is useful for digging fire pits, extinguishing campfires safely, clearing tent sites, and digging latrines.

Types of Overlanding Shovels

Long-handled, traditional shovels give great leverage and are excellent for heavy digging, but they’re bulky to carry on the road. Foldable military-style e-tools are compact, but many users find them hard on the back and shoulders for extended work.

The Delta Shovel blends the advantages of both styles. It collapses to a compact size for storage and transport, yet extends and locks into a full-sized shovel when you need real leverage and digging power.

The Delta Shovel

Inspired by the military e-tool, the Delta improves on that classic design for modern overlanding. Military e-tools were intended as a compact infantry carry with limited features; the Delta expands the concept into a more capable, multi-purpose tool tailored for campers, off-roaders, and overlanders.

The Delta is engineered to be portable while offering the strength and functionality needed on the trail. It’s versatile enough to handle routine camp chores as well as vehicle recovery.

From the Manufacturer

The Delta is primarily a dirt shovel but offers a year-round, multi-application solution. With its three-part aluminum telescoping indexed locking shaft, the Delta extends to full size or collapses to a portable length.

The foldable, three-position head allows use as a shovel, a hoe, and an e-tool, and it folds compactly for storage. The collapsible shaft offers multiple working lengths (full length is 51”). Combined, these features produce a powerfully versatile tool suitable for a wide range of tasks.

The Delta is offered in two material options: 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum or 12-gauge cold-rolled steel. Both provide excellent strength and durability; steel is heavier and typically less expensive, while aluminum saves weight for those prioritizing packability.

Weights are approximately 3.5 lbs for the aluminum version and 6.3 lbs for the steel model. When collapsed, the shovel stows to roughly an 11” x 24” x 3” footprint, making it easy to carry in a vehicle without sacrificing cargo space.

The two material options make the Delta adaptable to different owners’ needs. If you run a rugged, vintage truck that’s already built to withstand abuse, the 12-gauge steel makes sense. For modern family vehicles and lighter setups, the aluminum model balances strength and weight effectively.

Take It Anywhere

The Delta is sold with a dedicated vehicle mount for spare tire carriers and roof racks. The mount is designed to be lockable and rattle-free so the shovel stays secure and can be deployed quickly when needed—whether for vehicle recovery, digging a fire pit, or repairing a trail.

The roof-rack mount fits many aftermarket and factory racks. Constructed from 6061 aluminum, it installs on a wide variety of crossbars and supports. It fits roof bars up to about 2.0 inches in diameter and includes mounting hardware. The latch accepts a padlock for theft deterrence.

Another convenient storage option is a purpose-built, American-made MOLLE-compatible bag designed for the Delta. That makes it easy to stow the shovel in a drawer system, truck bed toolbox, or gear locker without rattling or taking up excessive space.
