Are you watching the show “Parenthood”? It’s one of our current favorites, and we’re especially taken with the storyline involving Crosby (played by Dax Shepard), who is renovating a recently purchased house in an effort to win back his ex-fiancé, Jasmine (played by Joy Bryant).

Some family members are skeptical about whether Crosby’s plan will work—except for Joel, his brother-in-law and an experienced builder, who seems to support the effort. We’re drawn to any plot that includes a DIY thread. Beyond entertaining television, DIY projects can actually bring couples closer together. The process of clearing away old debris and clutter to create something fresh and meaningful is a powerful metaphor for rebuilding a relationship and creating a shared future.
And if tempers flare during the work? Often a bit of demolition or hard labor helps diffuse anger—by the end of the day you’re usually so worn out that the argument fades into the background.
